On December 16, 1951 a C-46F aircraft owned and operated by Miami Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff from Newark Airport. The aircraft struck a brick building used by the Elizabeth Water Department and came to rest at the bank of the Elizabeth River. The crash site was located near Westfield Ave between Lowden & Harrison Streets. The wreckage was in a generally inverted position and partially submerged in shallow water. A fire developed instantly spreading to and damaging the brick building. All 53 passengers and crew of 3 were killed. One person on the ground was seriously injured.
